On 2 September 2026 Tencent held a launch event in Shenzhen. A venue that was ignored when the product first went live in March was now so oversubscribed that latecomers had to stand through the whole thing.
That turnaround took less than 180 days. Behind it is a war that is reshaping where the ordinary office worker stands β the battle for the entry point to AI office work.
1. Six months: from unwanted to a strategic product the giant bets on
In March, Tencent WorkBuddy was still just an AI office assistant inside the Tencent Cloud organisation that few people paid attention to.
By September it had completed more than 50 version iterations, its daily active users kept climbing, and it had become a strategic product Tencent pins great hopes on, after QQ and WeChat.
At the event Tencent formally announced the launch of the WorkBuddy open platform, bringing in more than a hundred ecosystem partners in the first batch. Liu Yi, vice president of Tencent Cloud, said something weighty:
We want to build WorkBuddy into an operating system for the agent era β not a stronger tool, but a platform that can carry all tools.
Note that word: platform. It no longer describes itself as a useful AI; it wants to be the foundation under every AI.
2. Why the giants suddenly all bet on AI office work
This is not only Tencent. Over the past two months Tencent, Alibaba and ByteDance successively completed organisational restructuring and product consolidation, putting their chips collectively on the AI office entry point.
QuestMobile's data gives the answer: in July 2026 the AI productivity office sector reached 102 million monthly active users in total.
One hundred million people means AI office work is no longer a concept; it is a market with a genuinely huge user base. Whoever grabs this entry point holds the lifeline of future productivity tools.
The current landscape is a three-way contest:
- Tencent leads: WorkBuddy 6.58 million MAU plus QClaw 2.26 million
- Douyin close behind: TRAE Work 1.9 million MAU
- Alibaba with multiple lines: QoderWork 230,000 MAU
One brutal reality: the gap between first place and fourth place is 28 times.
Behind that gap is not whose model is smarter, but whose entry point more people use and whose ecosystem retains them better.
3. The real turning point: from being able to generate to getting the job finished
If all you see is one more AI office app, you have missed the real watershed.
Over the past year AI played the generation card β writing copy, making slides, generating images. But after the generation? You still had to do the work yourself: revise, proofread, export, send it to your manager, follow up on the feedback.
Competition in the second half of 2026 has entered the stage of getting the job finished.
What does getting the job finished mean? The three layers of capability Tencent opened up this time make it clear:
- Skill: standardised single capabilities, take them and use them
- Expert: an agent that can call skills and orchestrate a process
- Connector: supporting both MCP and CLI, bringing outside tools in
This means AI is no longer a tool that writes a passage for you, but an agent that can orchestrate all your tools and see one whole job through from beginning to end.
Tongdaxin, GF Securities, E Fund, Weimob, Beisen, FanRuan, Meitu Design Studio, PKULawβ¦ more than 30 partners have already pushed themselves into this system. Across more than 20 industries β finance, law, healthcare, education, design β AI office platforms are growing.
4. Why I say you are being farmed
Now back to the line at the beginning.
When ordinary people use AI, the easiest trap to fall into is mistaking one tool for AI itself.
You write copy, build spreadsheets and draw diagrams in some app, and it feels smooth. But have you considered β are you using AI, or working for an entry point?
Once the fight over entry points is settled, whoever controls the platform gets to define:
- which model you use
- whether you have to pay for advanced features
- whose hands your data stays in
- how expensive it is for you to migrate when you want to leave
That is what being farmed means. The entry point is the toll road; the platform is the pricing power.
It is like the years when we thought we were scrolling our phones for free, while actually creating value for the operating system and the app ecosystem. AI office work today is repeating that scene β except this time, the tools start doing the work for you, and you are a step closer to being farmed.
5. What should ordinary people do? Three concrete suggestions
Seeing the bigger picture is not for anxiety, it is in order to stand in the right place. Three practical suggestions:
First, mix your tools; do not hang yourself on one tree.
Use at least two AI office tools from different ecosystems at the same time, and keep key documents and data portable. However convenient today is, do not stake your lifeline on a single entry point.
Second, do not be only a user; try being a supplier inside the ecosystem.

Third, cultivate the compound ability to get the job finished.

But you understand the business process, you know how to close things out, you can take responsibility for the result β that closed-loop ability to see a whole job through is exactly what AI still lacks, and the most valuable thing in this fight over entry points.
6. In closing
In the war over AI office work the deciding factor was never whose model has more parameters, but who can get users to finish the job and who can thicken the ecosystem.
And every one of us has a choice in this war: keep being the user who is fed, or stand on the side of the rule-makers and become part of the ecosystem.
Smart people have already started turning themselves into the people the entry points need, before the entry points are settled.
Do not wait until the farming is complete to remember you should have been holding a card of your own.
